ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Kay Royo. I am a geoscientist turned "data geek" whose passion lies in utilizing technical tools and methods to solve and simplify complex problems using data. I enjoy continuously improving my knowledge in data science and analytics to drive decision making. I am adept at working independently and collaborating with teams across multiple functions and I am driven to explore various strategies and methods to provide high-quality work and exceed expectations. I acquired 3 years of academic and professional experience in in research, data acquisition, and data analysis. Through these experiences, I learned the functionality of using data in variety of ways that are beneficial to diverse aspects of life. As an avid learner and a multifaceted individual who is fond of making connections between the unexpected and tackling challenges effectively, I am excited to make my own contributions to the development of the global society through the use of data.

I’m lucky to have worked with Kay, a data analyst who’s not only a responsible leader but also professional with her analytic skills. Kay is one of my team members for the Homelessness data analysis project, she set the plan in detail to ensure we can finish the project in less than two weeks. During the process of data scraping from the web, she never gave up on “computer crushing” and kept scraping over a hundred thousand websites. Besides, she can make different types of structural detail visualizations to gain readers' attention and telling the simple understanding story about her data. Moreover, she’s also a superb speaker, like she can capture people’s minds and listen to her “data story”, and end the story perfectly. I love how much she cares for the details and her passion for data. I would definitely work with her for future projects if possible.

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Kay on a project in our Data Analytics bootcamp at UC Berkeley. She was extremely organized, driven, and easy to work with. She put together a clean and user friendly website for our project that used Machine Learning to predict song genres based off of lyrics and audio features, using tools such as Jqeury and Bootstrap. She has high standards for product quality and has continued to work on and improve the project website post graduation from the course.

Kay and I met during her senior year at CSU East Bay at my course of Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, and then met again during her independent research course. I would rank her in the top 1% of all my classes, with an exceptional research attitude towards the sciences and analytical thinking. Even though Kay graduated with honors, that still doesn't fully describe Ms. Royo's seriousness towards her career inside and outside the classroom. For example, once she started her project for her independent study, it was essential for her to see the research completed. I was very impressed when she asked me if she could keep working with the sample material composed of a sediment core taken in the Hayward Shoreline, even if she had already graduated. This behavior shows genuine interest and commitment to science. She keeps learning and updating her knowledge and skills by taking online courses, learning new computer programming languages, or meeting with faculty and scientists to discuss academic, philosophical, or political contemporary topics. I know this first hand because she still was coming into laboratory meetings just before the Covid-19 restrictions started.
Her overall intelligence and enthusiasm are reflected in her grades, research ideas, continuing education, and placing herself in positions that will improve her knowledge. As a person, she is very charismatic, respectful, and kind, all characteristics presented in her role as a leader. The department of Earth & Environmental Sciences has a student chapter reopened thanks to Kay and three other ex-alumni from CSU East Bay. When a student can maintain their academic excellence while they incur in extracurricular activities that show excellent time management skills, one of the main reasons many students struggle during their academic careers. Also, this is another sign of industriousness in Kay. I have been a person who went through several obstacles pursuing my own academic goals. One of the motivations that I have all the time was the idea that I might find another student advancing to become a better version of him or herself. I understand that many professors write letters of recommendation in the student's best interest, but if I have to bet on one student that will go far in her career, that will be Kay Royo.
